Are USB Audiostick Albums the Future?

  June 19th, 2006

WE RECOMMEND
Alice Wang thinks that in the near future music will be sold on a USB drive or Audiostick as she calls them. I don't think this is so much a prediction as a statement of something that is already happening. However, I also think that currently the USB stick won't totally replace the CD. Why? Because my mom and lots of other parents simply don't get it when it comes to the digital world. Perhaps they are the analog holdouts in the new digital world.

I say music delivered on USB sticks is already happening, as I mentioned in this post a while back. Sure I agree with Alice but I just don't see the USB stick replacing all albums. I also think some music genres will be much more likely to go the USB route, like pop, techno and top 40. for some reason I don't see Grandpa's polka going digital. However, it would be an interesting option for lots of music lovers, especially if the music makers to the opportunity to embrace the format and included things like digital lyrics sheets and music videos that play along with the songs on PC. Then is that not what Apple is already doing with some of its iTunes tracks? What do you think?
