APC UPS Cuts Power to Peripherals to Save $$$

  December 5th, 2007

These days it seems like everyone is hoping on the "green" bandwagon and touting some feature to save some electricity. Ironically enough, this time around it's back up power manufacturer APC, who keeps you up and running and using electricity when the power is out. Their new Back-UPS ES 750 UPS features the ability to turn off your peripherals when you aren't utilizing them.

While it doesn't seem to do it while the computer is up and running, it appears to turn off the connected devices when the computer isn't drawing any power (i.e. hibernation, sleep, off). The ES 750 features 10 power outlets, 5 of which are backed up by the battery and 5 of which aren't, and while they say it can give you a theoretical uptime of 70 minutes without power you can expect a more realistic time of 3-10 minutes depending on load. APC reckons you ought to be able to save $40 a year with this puppy and seeing as how the unit will set you back $100, it should pay for itself before the battery needs replaced in about three years time. After it dies, maybe you will want to turn it into an external hard drive to get even more use out of it.
