The 5G iPod video has officially been renamed to iPod classic during today's special iPod event. The name change is due to entire line of iPod except shuffle now handles video playback. With the 3G iPod nano only capable of storing 8GB of tunes, this is where the iPod classic comes in. The new capacity is 160GB ($349), double that of the 80GB entry level model ($249). And instead of plastic, the classic is now all-metal made of steel and aluminum, and is available in silver or black. Jobs touted this as the first iPod with space to hold 40,000 songs in contrast to 1000 song capacity for the iPod grandpa. The 'classic' screen size remains the same at 2.5" 320x240, but the battery is improved by 50% to 30 hours in comparison to 5.5G 80GB. Ironically, claimed video playback time is cut down to 5 from 6.5 hours. We attribute this to a smaller battery with the smaller chassis measuring just 4.1" x 2.4" x 0.41". Last but not least are menu improvements plus the nifty 'cover flow' and component AV connectivity with an optional cable. Output is limited to 480p/576p, however. - Get Apple iPod Classic (160GB, black) now for $389.00 at Amazon.com Marketplace
