Wireless USB Ecosystem Grows a Little Bigger with Artimi Drive

Speed Dragon, Age Star, DoTop have announced they have selected Artimi reference design for its Wireless USB hard drive. So it's only matter of time (hopefully soon) before some first-tier peripheral companies start sourcing to these OEMs for the cable-free USB drive. Silicon manufacturers traditionally build reference designs as a technical blueprint to enable a fast track to market as well as to cut cost and time in the customer's integration process.

In addition to Artimi's CWUSB drive reference design kit, there's also one for printers and AIOs. Each kit is complete with Artimi's WiMedia-compliant A-150 MAC controller and Zero Install USB DWA that promises driverless install perhaps. What only got our attention is the relatively low speed of 100Mbps. While 12.5MBps is somewhat disappointing performance, it should surpass the USB spoofing techniques adopted in numerous WiFi routers. Alereon is competing for the same market and has rolled out its own design kit back in CES 2008.
