With great storage comes great responsibility and by responsibility we mean bandwidth. The idea of burning Blu-ray discs 50GB at a time is an amazing concept. Unfortunately, the reality is that 50 GBs of data being written at 1x speed would take hours. This is entirely too long to be useful as a storage or for archiving media. Buffalo changes the story finally with a USB 3.0 Blu-ray burner capable of 12x BD writing with the MediaStation BR3D-12U3
. This BD drive combined with SuperSpeed USB could make this drive burn BD discs as fast as burning CDs a few years ago.
The other key thing to remember is that most Blu-ray movies are not being encoded at max bitrate but USB 2.0 is already nearly maxed out with BD content. The media treats to come like 3D and even higher bit-rate movies will require the new speed only available externally via USB 3.0
. Buffalo lists the drive as "3D ready" through the use Cyberlink TrueTheater conversion. The same software also upscales any 480p DVD to 1080p. Buffalo is pretty proud of this and is suggesting an MSRP of $349. The external Blu-ray burner will be available later this month for those in need.
