It's difficult to tell one external hard drive from another unless you have something like the Drobo. Buffalo has found a way to give its MiniStation and DriveStation some spotlight in the blogsphere with its in-house Turbo USB feature. In a nutshell, Turbo USB is intended to increase the speed of connection between the USB-to-SATA converter and the internal drive, by as much as 60%. Since Buffalo can't do anything on the host side, we reckon a whole lot more cache might be added to the controller level to maximize the efficiency. Impress Japan has a first look at the Turbo USB with some in-depth benchmark. Basically, Turbo USB boosted the sequential read from 33 to 40MB/s and the sequential write from 35 to 41MB/s. These translate to about 21% and 34% improvement in read & write performance respectively. They aren't even close to 60% jump but it's good to see some USB drives can finally reach 40MB/s.
