VoIP & Speed Bump for Cypress' 'Wireless USB'

  November 1st, 2005

VoIP & Speed Bump for Cypress' 'Wireless USB'Cypress has been investing a lot into its proprietary USB & radio on a chip that uses 2.4Ghz ISM band. Its own 'Wireless USB' has found its way into several offerings like the Belkin MediaPilot keyboard and Logitech Cordless 2.4Ghz remote. It now expands beyond HIDs to include VoIP as one of the 'Wireless USB' applications.

In addition to having the low-voltage (1.8 to 3.6V), KISSBind handshake feature and several interference immunity measures, the CYRF6936 radio-on-a-chip gets boost to 1Mbps, enough speed for USB Skype phones and voice-grade USB headsets. You certainly won't find Logitech and Creative switching its USB audio line-up to Cypress' WirelessUSB since the audio data will be heavily compressed over such narrow bandwidth.

Cypress is sending out samples today in 40-pin QFN packages, and you can expect full production to begin in Q1 2006.
