DisplayLink DL-3000 Ushers in a New Era for USB 3.0 Video Devices
The announcement of the all new DisplayLink USB 3.0-enabled DL-3000 controller chips certainly falls into the category of "better late than never". As IOGear HD AV adapter has proved, while DisplayLink's software has matured, the USB 2.0 bus is just not fast enough to do justice in the high definition era. With this desperately needed upgrade, we can see a real "golden age" of DisplayLink devices on the horizon as the sky is nearly the limit on what they can now do. With a bus that is literally ten times as wide as the older version, there should be no reason that true HD (1080p), high bit-rate movies and the like will suffer from any of the previous DisplayLink's issues. After all, there is not much need to compress the video down to fit it through USB 3.0 pipe. As an added bonus, the DisplayLink DL-3000 will also boast HDCP 2.0 capabilities, dual monitor support and even come with Gigabit Ethernet support. It even has multi-channel audio support making an ideal upgrade for netbooks and budget notebooks without spending a fortune. DisplayLink states that this new technology is ready for immediate release so it shouldn't be too long before third party manufacturers start levering the power of the DL-3000 and get new and shiny products on to the store shelves quickly. The only thing which is not known at this time is how much these new products will eventually cost.
