Turn Drobo into a NAS on Apple Airport Extreme Network

  June 14th, 2007

WE RECOMMEND
Turn Drobo into a NAS on Apple Airport Extreme Network

Some people scream "what not a NAS" when they read about Drobo, but clearly, people at Data Robotics are trying to target the much larger DAS (direct attached storage) market first and at least make some money back before venturing into the consumer NAS market. However, if you still are whining, here's a the proof that the Drobo will work with USB routers.

This application note lays out the procedures in setting up Drobo on the new Airport Extreme. The steps are pretty standard. You format Drobo in HFS+ and then enable AirPort Disk. Though, we would like to know whether the Windows-only utility will still able to report essential data like HDD space used for data protection and the amount reserved for expansion.

If you've $499 and plenty of SATA drives to spare, this enclosure can consolidate all the storage with the added data redundancy through a single USB cable.
