Captain Discharged for Mishandling USB Drive

  February 2nd, 2006

WE RECOMMEND
Looks like Dutch military personnel could use a lesson on encryption 101. A captain in the Dutch air force returning from Afghanistan left his thumbdrive containing mission data on a rental car. Situation got worse when two lads found out about the unencrypted files on the USB flash drive. The info discovered is mostly reconnaissance mission details and rule of engagement recommendations for the oversea troops in the Middle East.

Anyway, the guys carried out their civil duty by returning the drive to appropriate military department after exploiting this major military's weakness to the press. The red-faced Dutch military fired the captain, and USB flash drives again got more bad press. (via Expatica)
