The application that literally saved me from storming Verizon Wireless for their lousy Wireless reception in the house is making a transition to U3. That's right, Skype has announced a release date of September 30th for a U3 edition of their Voice over IP (VoIP) software.
For those who have somehow managed to surf the web for the past few months without hearing about Skype, hear this. Skype is a freeware instant messenger client from the makers of KaZaA (thankfully without the spyware) that can transfer files and make unlimited calls between PCs for free using Peer to Peer networking for free. It's cross platform and works on Windows, OS X, Linux, and PocketPC.
Skype can also make PC to Phone calls using the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) for dirt cheap prices averaging €10 for 10 hours, international or local. More recently, users can lease phone numbers for phone users to dial into skype and even leave voicemails. A U3 version of this would make for the killer calling card on your key chain.
