USB 2.0 - Acts as 1.1 - Pendrive - Unknown device Problem

This problem has bugged me for days now....

Here are my machine specs :
* AMD 2400 XP processor
* Asus A7N266VM mother board
* The mother board has 2 USB 1.1 ports.
* I have disabled Legacy USB support in the BOIS
* I have disabled MCP USB controller in BOIS
* My BOIS is uptodate - Latest stable version 1007

And...
* I have a Ali PCI card which has two USB 2.0 ports.
* I have already done a safe mode clean up drivers.

The problem is, My Sandisk pen drive is not recognised as a USB 2.0 device when i connect it.

If I disable the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" in Device Manger, then my Sandisk pen drive is recognized. But as a USB 1.1 device.

If I enable the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" in Device Manger, then my Sandisk Pen drive is recognized as "Unknown Device".

Here is a snap shot of my device manager :

My IRQ settings are as below :

IRQ 0 System timer OK
IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard OK
IRQ 3 Communications Port (COM2) OK
IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM1) OK
IRQ 5 NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management OK
IRQ 6 Standard floppy disk controller OK
IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK
IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System OK
IRQ 12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse OK
IRQ 13 Numeric data processor OK
IRQ 14 Primary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 16 ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller OK
IRQ 18 ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller OK
IRQ 19 NVIDIA GeForce2 Integrated GPU OK
IRQ 20 NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) MCP Audio Processing Unit OK
IRQ 22 NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) Audio Codec Interface OK

Any solution to this problem. I want USB 2.0. Reinstalling windows would be the last thing that i would like to hear.

Thanks in advance.

Arjun

There's no need to disable the onboard USB ports.

What we have here is the classic ALi USB card problems. They are unreliable. If you search the forums, you will find many people who had ALi card problems.

You must do what they did - exchange the card for an NEC version. Adaptec, ADS, Belkin, D-Link, Keyspan, Koutech and Siig all make NEC cards.

Thanks!

But is that the "only" option left ?

Any tricks to get this thing working ? like cleanup drivers by physcially deleting files etc ?

Any remote possibilities ?

As long as it uses an NEC chip, yes.

ok. Here is the update.

My vendor asked to see if the Intex card works fine on a trial basis.

So, i brought the card home, did a safe mode clean up., and shut down the machine....

then....removed the ALI chipset card, and plugged in the Intex Card. But the intex card had the Via chipset.

Booted up the machine in normal mode. Windows automatically installed its standard drivers. I did not use the drivers provided by the intex folks.

And... guess what ? I am now having true USB 2.0 ports. I am able to connect my pendrive, and the I am able to do full speed (480 Mbps) transfer. Windows no longer warns me that I have plugged in a hi-speed device to low speed port.

Thanks for all the help.

BTW, here is the new IRQ settings just in case its helpful to some one....

IRQ 0 System timer OK
IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard OK
IRQ 3 Communications Port (COM2) OK
IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM1) OK
IRQ 5 NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management OK
IRQ 6 Standard floppy disk controller OK
IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK
IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System OK
IRQ 12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse OK
IRQ 13 Numeric data processor OK
IRQ 14 Primary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 16 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller OK
IRQ 16 VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller OK
IRQ 18 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller OK
IRQ 19 NVIDIA GeForce2 Integrated GPU OK
IRQ 20 NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) MCP Audio Processing Unit OK
IRQ 21 NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) Audio Codec Interface OK
