To use iPod (any of them), you'll need iTunes (only latest 6.0.2 is available), QuickTime 7.0.4 and iPod Updater.

http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
(This includes the QT 7.0.4, FYI)

Install the iTunes first and then the iPod Updater.

BTW, which generation of iPod did you get from your friend? Click-wheel?

Oh okay... Just install those software and plug in the iPod photo into a USB 2.0 port. Make sure you have XP Service Pack 2 installed (Available in Windows Update) otherwise, the upload process will be slow due to lack of Hi-Speed USB support.

What happens when you connect it? Anything? Errors?

Why did your friend give it to you?

Does it work on your friend's PC? Any other PC?

P.S. In the future please reply to all points or what happened above will happen again. We wasted a whole bunch of time and got nothing done.

Listen carefully. You really need to test your iPod on another PC or Mac. Only then will we know if it even works.

I have been having the same problem:

I have an ipod with color display. I've had it since October. I use it on my laptop and my desktop. It has always worked fine and there's been no problem with it until last night.

It was plugged into my laptop and the screen on the ipod had the "Do not disconnect" symbol. I was doing something else, but noticed the screen light up and change to the normal beginning menu screen. Then the bubble in my taskbar popped up and said, "USB Device not recognized."
So I unplugged it from my laptop and moved it over to my desktop. When I plugged it in, the same bubble appeared.

Since then, I've reset all the settings on my ipod. I also uninstalled and re-installed the newest versions of itunes and ipod updater. I also got the latest service pack from Microsoft. Restarted the computer and tried again. Nothing.
In the device manager, it reads as an "Unknown Device" and the device status reads "No drivers are installed for this device". I tried to automatically update the drivers, but windows says it has the best driver.

I, too, no longer have the installation cd that came with my purchase. Everywhere that offers a driver just downloads the ipod Updater. Since none of the programs (Windows, itunes, Updater) recognize there is an ipod connected, none will work.

Any suggestions? Is there any way to get only the driver without the updater? Am I just out of luck?

Isn't it under warranty? You should bring it in for service.

I live in China right now, and there's really no one around to service it. At least no one that speaks English. The nearest Apple retailer may be in Hong Kong. Also, the China mail service doesn't allow electronics to be shipped overseas. Go figure.

Thanks anyway.

If anyone else ever has this problem, I seem to have fixed it.

Since the ipod still worked on its own, I just let it play until the battery completely died out and it wouldn't turn back on. Then I plugged it into the charger to give it a little juice and restarted it. That seems to have fixed the problem because I just plugged it into my computer and it popped up as new hardware and Windows now recognizes it.

Give it a try.

Hiya, I'm having the same problem with 60g video ipod. IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS!!!!! When it's attached it comes up as malfunctioning, when I check it out-no drivers are installed. Not recognised in disc mode either. I've tried to install the software from the installation disc-nothing. It charges ok and has a full menu selection but as I can't connect it with any of my pc's, it has no music. The pc must be fine as it recognises my other ipod's without any problem. As i say, this is driving me nuts so if anybody has any suggestions, I would love to hear them, thanks

i had a similar problem and just fixed it. With it plugged in, reset the ipod. Do this by holding down the menu button and the center button for around 6s. Afterwards, it'll do the apple logo and then turn on. Afterwards it acted normally. Hope this helps.

I have a simular problem with my ipod video.

When I plug my ipod to laptop running on XPSP2, via USB, the 'Do Not Disconnect' logo appears on the screen, as it always has done. But, usually this flashes on and off.

it doesn't any more.

I have tried connecting on my dektop, still does the same. I have re-installed Itunes and ipod reset utility, still no luck.

I bought a new USB cable, still no luck.

I tried the draining the battery task, it still does the same thing.

Any ideas? Thanks

Hiya, the problem I was having was down to the usb connectors on m'board being faulty. I did repair it myself but was the last resort as I thought the m'board was shot and it was really fiddly. Strip the ipod down and remove the clip covering the connector. Check to see if any of the brass connectors on the usb are out of line. If they are CAREFULLY ease them back down so that they are in line again-use a magnifying glass and a plastic ipod tool. Like I said, quite fiddly but it worked and its still OK. I must admit I'm now a bit more gentle when I'm placing the charger or usb lead into the ipod!!! Hope this helps......

You need to make sure it is plugged into the same USB port every time.

I plugged it into one port on my pc when i first got it and it worked fine... Then when the attery died and i put it in another port, it came up with 'device not recognised' so i put it in the port i used first of all and it worked fine...

Also, just to note, i don't have iTunes installed, just Apple quicktime as it's my PC at work and we are not allowed to install Itunes (takes up a lot of memory) i have it on my laptop at home however. Eitehr way, i dont think it's imperavtive that you have iTunes installed to get the iPod to work or be recognised my your PC.

If the ipod is not recognised then try another high speed usb port (high speed only). Leave it for a few minutes and then check to see if it is recognised. Resetting the Ipod wont change anything on your PC so there is no point in trying this.

Hope this helped?!

Ipod not recognized in Windows

I am having similar problem I have until now tried all the steps shown in IPOD support including the 5Rs. I have uninstalled and installed ITUnes and IPOD Updater. I have connected the Ipod to all the USB ports available on the system.

I have a Ipod nano (2006) model, Windows XP Service Pack 3 & iTunes8.0

IPod is NOT enumerated in the Device Manager. It does not show-up in the explorer nor in iTunes.

Note: Earlier it was working on my system. However, it is not working anymore. It did work on my friend's system.

Does anyone what the problem is and how to fix it.

hi,

i had the same problem as everyone listed in this thread.

thing was my ipod 5.5 gen vid was working for a year on my pc but when I changed computers two months ago it stopped working.

anyways I did what most ppl have recommended but to no avail.

anyways I played around with my PC and I got my PC to detect my ipod.

what you do is go to add new hardware in control panel and get the PC to detect. It should detect, and then prompt you to install drivers in the next window.

click ok, and your PC should detect with the "new hardware detected popup" in your taskbar.

hope that helps.

I've been having the same problem with my nano 3rd gen,
it's really annoying, i've tried all of the above, nothing seems to work,
it just comes up with 'USB device is not recognized' no matter what i do

I really wish there was some easy solution that would just fix it, it seems to be happening to a lot of ipods, should get like a refund or something for it.

i need my ipod to live, to be honest.

Pleeease somebody help mee!!
