Sharing HP1210 in a Network

I'm having problems with sharing my new HP PSC 1210 through a network with different OSs. The network has 4 machines :

2 - Windows XP
1 - Windows 98
1 - Linux

I tried putting the multifunction printer (hp1210) first in one of the Windows XP machines. The other windows XP and the Linux boxes did well printing through it, but the WIN 98 box couldn't install it because there were no drivers for it. I installed the cdrom, which says it's compatible with win 98 , but the CD-ROM doesn't install any driver, it just installs the softwares to scan and detect the printer from the USB. So, the win98 box couldn't print.

Then I tried to put it in the Linux box, which did well and had much better performance in scanning. But now, although everyone in the network can see the printer, no one could add it to the system cause neither windows XP nor win 98 have the drivers for it. And as I tried before, the cdrom installation did NOTHING in both win 98 and win XP. So ... I have a printer, but I can't use it through the network , because i don't have the drivers for it.

As I'm not an expert in printers, I'm asking for help. Does anybody know where I could find these drivers? Or if I can solve this problem in another way ?

Thanks , i'm really looking for help :(

When you browse for the printer (forget scanning over the network - the HP can't do that) in Network Neighborhood and double-click it, what happens? It should prompt you for a driver. In that case, choose "Select from a list" and then Have Disk. Browse to the Win9x folder on the CD (under Language) and install those drivers.

If Windows uses the wrong driver, you can always update the driver manually the same way.

Keep in mind that you must be logging into Win98 with "Client for MS Networks" as the primary logon and be using a Username and password that is registered on the XP machine.

Thanks for the quick reply billyd.

I've already forgotten scanning ... it's ok to scan just from my box.

When I click in the Network Neighboorhood, the printer is there, fully accessible, no problems at all with user/password/sharing . This I could handle well, even through linux.

Then I double click the printer, and it prompts me for a driver. I insert the HP cd and go under : D:\en\driver\w9x\ but windows says there is no driver for the printer. I've tried other dirs like : d:\, or d:\drivers\* and everywhere i could see a .inf. But none of them said "ok, this is a driver" to me.

Same problema with the XP systems. Exactly the same. They all say that the driver in the CD is not a suitable driver for the "hardware i'm trying to install".

The XP -> XP prints, because it uses that "magical" driver through network... but the XP that has to use the printer through the network still doesn't have a driver for it.

If you knew what files I should assemble to make a driver for it, i would be glad to do it.

HP has been known to pack all setup files in compressed CAB files so that you can't browse to them. What you can try is running the full printer setup, deleting the installed printer and then browsing to the network connection.

Now, when prompted for the drivers, use the Search function to find the various files on your hard drive (C:\Windows\System, etc.).

Here are the drivers. Big download!

I“m downloading it right now, I“ll try that. Thank you.

But do you have any idea on what filename should I look for ? All I know is that it should be a *.inf.

The download will take + 2 hours ... but if it works, i“m very happy with that.

When Windows prompts you for the driver, the name of the file is usually visible in the title bar.. Just click Browse and you'll see the file name in the "Named" dialog on the browse window.

Really Bad News

I emailed HP two days ago talking about this problem. Today I received a response from tech support, just giving the link to this document :

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/docume...ocName=bpu04830

Which wasn't quite what I was expecting ... it says there that it is NOT SUPPORTED to use the PSC 1200 series through a network.

It also says that there is no driver available for it. Take a look to see if you can help me with anything!

I“m starting from zero now, think I'll have to write a driver for it. I have a PPD file that I used for linux. Maybe porting it to windows should be the only hope.

You got any ideas?

As long as you share a printer on the host and have drivers for the client OS, it should be sharable. What they're saying is that they do not want to support it in that application.

Do as I suggested. Install the printer software locally on the client (feel free to actually connect the printer for a time) and then move the printer back to the host. Browse via the network now. When prompted for the drivers find them on the client and use them.

It's true that some USB-only printers cannot be networked. The secret is to always buy a printer with parallel as an option.

OS: WinXP, Win2K, Win2K3

I ran into this same problem (not being able to share a PSC 1210). Both the sharer and the "sharee" are running WinXP. However, never one to give up, I think I've figured out a way to get sharing to work (despite what HP officially says). I've only done a brief test, but I can print text and color images - I don't know how this will work long-term.

The sharing code was trying to install a driver for the printer, but it couldn't get the one from the provider. However, there is a driver on the CD, it's just not obvious. When prompted for the *.INF file, I browsed to the CD (D:) and selected hpzid412.inf (the inf seemed to be for the 1210, after browsing through it). I clicked OK and the driver installed, competing the share.

I know it's been a while since the last post here, but this may help if someone is still interested....

OS: XP

Hey guys,

First off, thanks for your help. I just bought one of these and with your help was able to get it sharing with any other Windows XP system in my house.

Unfortuantely, I still got 1 problem. My sister uses Windows 98 SE and i'm unable to share it. I've tried those *.INF files found on the cd, and downloaded that huge "patch" of 172 megs. I was wondering, have you guys been successful with the PSC 1210 and Windows 98? Could really use the help.

Thanks,
Ren

There shouldn't be a big difference.

1. Be sure that you log onto Win98 with "Client for Microsoft Networks" as the Primary logon. Log on with the same username and password as WinXP.

2. Be sure that all PCs are in the same Workgroup.

3. Be sure that the firewall in XP is disabled.

OS: xp, me

Hope this is still some help. I was browsing around and found this thread. Just bought a PSC 1210 today and had the same problem - the printer's connected to an XP machine and I couldn't install it on my ME machine as a network printer. I found a solution, but it's a pain in the a**.

Here's a link that helped me out. Go to the last post.

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/...threadId=310607

All the files are on the HP disk, ignore Window's requests for the original OS disk. When you search for the files, they may not have the same actual extension that it asks for. For example a requested file that ended in .drv was actually .dr_ on the disk.

OS: XP, OS X

solution for PSC 1210 sharing problem

I finally found a solution to a similar problem (after many painful days of failure), so I'll post it in case it can help someone with a related problem.

Just for reference, the problem was:
I have a PSC 1210 attached to a wireless print server (motorola wps870g) and couldn't get it to print from my computer running XP. When I tried to select the printer model using the Add Printer wizard, it didn't show up, and the Have Disk function wouldn't recognize the driver file from the CD. I also tried following the print server manual's directions to install the printer locally using the USB cable, then change the printer's port to either a TCP/IP port for LPR printing, or the port for SMB printing. But when I would change the port, the printer would just disappear from the printer list alltogether until the next time it was plugged in via a USB cable.

The Solution:

I finally got it to work this way on XP:
1) Install the printer drivers locally using the HP printer CD or the huge download
2) Start the Add Printer wizard to add your printer the appropriate way (mine was through IPP printing)
3) Choose a different printer model from the list (I used HP Deskjet 550C) and finish the installation, but don't print a test page yet.
4) Go to your Printers folder and right-click on the new printer and choose Properties
5) Go to the Advanced tab and choose the correct printer driver from the pulldown menu (psc 1200 series). Click OK and you should be done.

I was also able to set up network printing on a Mac running OS X by using the HPIJS package and Ghostscript and using LPR Printing:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/

Good luck. Hope that helps someone avoid some anguish.

Also, in the course of doing this, I found some other links that may be helpful to a different situation:

I went through the same headache with the PSC1210. I have a US robotics wireless router with a printserver and 4 port switch. I found that downloading the driver for an HP Deskjet3420 and then using it as the printer driver worked fine. I had already installed the printer to each of my machines with the printer attached directly, (not knowing any better) So I don't know if you have to do that first , or if you can just go straight to the 3420 driver. It won't scan, but I am only interested in the photocopy and printing part of it. hope this helps someone
