Cool FIX!! -- USB Flash Drive does not show up in explorer

Woo Hoo! I was going to put this in the thread which addressed this but it is now closed.

If you have ever loaded Daemon Tools (it appears the newer versions are the problem) and your USB Mass Storage Drives will not show up in Explorer then your problem is a file called sptd.sys. It resides in either "system32" or "system32\drivers". You can simply rename it or delete it. Restart and Wahlah!!

Note: Alcohol 120% and some other apps load these tools to run. If you delete or rename this file Dameon Tools will not function properly, thereby whatever app may be using DT. In Dameon Tools you can repair this file... but then you will be back in this boat again!

Angry DID NOT FIX MY ISSUE - But IE can browse the drive

Okay...you found you problem...but I do not have the sytd.sys file anywhere on my PC and I'm still having a similiar issue:

When I attach my flash drive (or any other USB external drive), Explorer does not recongnize/show the drive....however...

1.) The PC recongnizes the drive....as soon as I plug the drive(s) in, Adobe Elements (and other apps) quickly seaches the drive for images;
2.) Windows (XP Pro) Disk Management list the drive...even assigns a drive letter ...which I can even change;
3.) "Remove Hardware" app even list the drive......
4.) Software applications allow me to browse the drive in order to open/save files
5.) BUT EXPLORER NEVER SHOWS THE DRIVE....NOR ALLOWS ME TO BROWSE THE DRIVE LETTER!!!!

HOWEVER......
Internet Explorer allows me to type the drive letter into the "Address" line and then I can browse the drive...and I have full file management capibilities. Go Figure.....

I have explored all of the suggestions listed on several threads...but none seem to help....

FYI --- This problem does not exist when I attach a Firewire (IEEE) storage device......interesting. And all of my external storage devices work on other PCs.

I'm about to concluded that some app has disabled Explorer browsing on USB drives.....but I have too many apps to go through....and I guess I'm stuck with my workaround....using Internet Explorer to browse the drive(s).

Thumbs up m4nd4t3 solution works for me

m4nd4t3, you are the greatest … how the hell can you figure this out? Your solution works 100%. Sptd.sys resides in system32/drivers and I renamed it … reboot and Wahlah Explorer shows my USB flash drive, and works with long file names too.

Relief at long last …

Before this fix, I had to give it a drive letter name in Disk management, open it and paste files to it there and then … and my files names will also be shorten. As soon as changed to Explorer, the USB drive disappears even thought it shows up in Device Manger/ Disk drives and Disk Management.

This problem does not happen in any of my other PCs that are not connected to Internet. I can only suggest there is conflict with IE firewall and/or another program. But getting rid of Sptd.sys solves the problem for me too.

m4nd4t3 is true champion!!!

gismann:

You described absolutely exactly the same scenario that I've been having with a clients laptop.. right down to the adobe apps and firewire observations etc...

It's the adobe program (ours was err photoshop image browser or something to that effect) as soon as I uninstalled this application that searches the drive for images when you plug the drive in, everything works again.

You noticed that explorer will show the drive from open dialogues in adobe applications.. well basically it 'whores' explorer (for lack of a better term).
I kinda steals the right to show removable usb devices... rather pig headed of it really lol...
I'm guessing Adobe will have to promptly release a fix for this if they havent already - I can see a lot of unhappy designers otherwise hehe.

Hope this helps ya mate.. and anyone else with this problem.

Sorry for not updating this thread sooner...but my issue seemed to go away(sort of)...but now it's back. I appreciate the suggestions from MRD and have begun looking into the Adobe apps as being my problem. I updated Adobe Acrobat 6.x the other day and now the problem is back. I've uninstalled several Adobe apps...including Bridge & Elements 3.x ...but not Acrobat or Photoshop CS....because I use them all day long.

In my first thread I stated that my Firewire works, but not USB. Now even the Firewire no longer works. I can still access the drive(s) via apps and Internet Explorer...just NOT 'My Computer' or Windows "Explorer'.

I've tried switching drive letters.....from F: to Z:...but no luck. When I reboot with the drive attached...my laptop then shows the drive letter in Explorer.

This is too weird. I'll keep plugging away and let you know.

I'll keep

Thank you mrd!

I had this problem that suddenly the windows explorer does not recognize the USB, although I was fully operational from applications like Word and Excel.

Once I deleted the adobe picture editor everything was business as usual.

Thanks again!

usb drive shows up in explorer but not in application browse

Hi,
This may be slightly off topic here but I have experienced a similar but opposite situation. When a usb flash drive is plugged in, the computer recognizes it, assigns a drive letter, and shows it in explorer.

If I then say "Save As..." from an application and try to save it to that drive, it doesn't show up in the "Save As.. " dialog box.

If I hit cancel and try it again, the drive letter shows up in the "Save As..." dialog.

Anyone seen this situation. .. very frustrating.

Thanks,
Richard

Lightbulb

If u can't find it then do this:

1. Open Computer Management.
2. Click on Disk Management.
3. Find your disk.
4. Right Click and click open.

OR

Follow Steps 1-3

1. Remember the drive letter.
2. Open My Computer
3. Type the disk drive. (Ex. Drive I, type I:/ and click enter)

I will try to find a permanent solution soon.

Hope that helps!

If you can detect the USB drive and not showing it in your explorer try the folowing method.
Check if you have mapped drives(network drive). Try to disconnect all the mapped drives, refresh the explorer, may appear the USB drive. I think the probelm is the shared network drive and USB drive using the same drive letter.

free...

I have a very similar problem.

When I connect the flash drive into the USB ports, the flash drive gets power (the light is on) and the "Safely remove icon" appears on the app. tray. It doesn't appear in My Computer nor does it appear on Disk Management.

I have a software called "USBDeview" which shows the device and its manufacturer's name "Jetflash....." But it doesn't show anything under drive letters.

The device shows up in the device manager with no yellow signs. It shows up under Disk Drives and under USB controllers. Under properties, the location of the drive is written as Location 0.

I've even tried editing the registry (which ended up screwing up the booting of the computer)

Is there any view to make sure that the device first shows up under device manager?

Re: FIX!! -- USB Flash Drive does not show up in explorer

OMFG, I have been tearing my hair out with this problem, and you have solved it! It was Alcohol 120% all along.
I have been "drive managing" my Flash drive and having to put up with short file names for TOO LONG, you sir, are a FREAKEN LEGEND!

PS: Is there any way to make this more common knowledge? Was blind luck I found this site.
