USB Dongle Breaks Great Firewall of China

  August 8th, 2008

With the Olympics kicking off in China today the freedom sucking policies of the Chinese government are one of the big topics surrounding the games. In the past, the Chinese government has used information acquired from Yahoo to jail journalists who create dissention by not agreeing with the Chinese government.

One major concern with the Olympics being in China is that the Chinese government could be monitoring and filtering the Internet access of journalists and athletes covering the games. A USB flash drive called the Freedom Stick is available that promises to circumvent what has become known as the Great Firewall of China. The stick costs about $30 and has software on it that secures the communications of any computer plugged into it. Whether or not it works is unknown, but we do know we wouldn’t want to be the one testing it in a Communist country.
