Fretlight $500 Learning USB Guitar: Not Quite Light Enough

  June 5th, 2008

DON'T MISS

On the surface, we approve of the idea of Fretlight Electric Guitar: including LEDs that light up to demonstrate chord shapes in this USB-powered axe seems like a good way to teach a beginner the basics of how to play, particularly in conjunction with the included educational software. The expanded chord and scale library built into the software is a good idea, too, as is the inclusion of tweaks that allow the guitar to work with unusual tunings, and the package as a whole certainly gives itself a leg up over competing options.

All of that said, however, we balk a bit at the price: $500 for a learning guitar? "Pro-quality alder and maple body" sounds nice and all, but since a decent quality standard electric (without LEDs or USB connections) starts at around $550, we have to wonder how much of that price is the Brookstone brand name.
