"Carriage Jam error...lightly used printer" After reading that the problem with my printer is so common, I wish I'd never bought it. I just recently replaced my original black ink cartridge and I've had the printer for just about 2 years, so it's obvious that I used the printer very lightly. How disappointing. From Melinda, June 07, 2005
"Piece of crap!!" I'm having the infamous Carriage jam error. Which is BS. Got damn HP customer service sucks, not to mention no one can speak english so I can only half understand them. I've had this printer like 2 years and no problems. Now I have to replace my printer. From Terretta, May 20, 2005
"Oh my Gosh..wish I knew this was here" Carriage Jam.....I have had this for less than a year when this message popped. I work on different HP products at work & would not recommend any I have come in contact with. I will not spend my hard earned $'s on any HP products again. They have not impressed me in any manner!! From Becky, May 11, 2005
"Officejet V40" Well, I had no idea that there were such problems with this unit. I've had it for over 2 years now, and all of the sudden, the 'carriage jam' message appeared. It wasn't until I searched those words that I found so many others experienced the same thing. HP should DEFINITELY have some sort of fix for this. Horrible. From Karin, April 29, 2005
"HP Officejet V40" I have owned my Officejet V40 less than 2 years now and I just got the "carriage jam" message today.
I called HP's technical support line and they told me that the machine was "finished" and that I had to get a new one.
They tried to tell me they would exchange mine for a refurbished one, but I would need to pay $121.00 + Sales Taxes.
This was my first product I have ever bought from HP and definitelly the last... From Daniel, April 11, 2005
"HP v40 Carriage Jam" My HP officejet v40 worked just through the warranty then presented the notorious "Carriage Jam" error and never worked again. HP support walked me through many steps to try and clear and then advised me to buy a new printer. Avoid this printer at all costs unless you want to throw your money away! From Jennifer, April 09, 2005
"carriage jam" I called HP about the "carriage jam" error. I received this error and my printer will not print even though I can get the carriage to move to the left side. An HP quality case manager called me back and informed me that because my carriage moves, this is not the same problem that everyone on the internet is having. Who out there has a carriage that will move but still gets the carriage jam error which renders the printer useless? From Lisa Harpe, April 07, 2005
"Officejet V40 works great" I am surprised reading the problems some have had; I have owned the HP Officejet V40 for more than 2 years and have printed more than the average amount of color photos/graphics for I do flyers/business cards/photos from my home office with orders of over 200 at a time. It has worked so well that I now own a large format printer from HP. From Tammy, March 15, 2005
"Junk" This was the first time I bought a HP and it willd definitley be the last!! I bought it because of the FAXing option but now I can't even do that. I too have the dreaded CARRIAGE JAM!! I have tried EVERYTHING and I can't get it to work. I should have know it was junk when the price was too good too be true! I will never buy HP again!! From Melinda Aspell, March 12, 2005
"I think I found the problem!" I own a v40 that has the jam problem. since it's dead and out of warranty I decided to take it apart.
I found a lip broken off a gear that moves the ink cleaning/parking dock assembly.
The gear is plastic and the lip is very thin. I believe that because of use, it just breaks off.
I'm going to see if i can get the part from HP. (RIGHT!)
If anyone else finds the same thing please post it. From Bobby, February 22, 2005
"Jeez, Carriage Jam here too!!" Total crud. Guess I shoulda read this page first! Owned over a year, thought it was cool 'til this carriage jam. Disassembled as best I could to repair, total poop. Powered down with carriage in different positons, cleaned everything, switched 'puter it was attached to. Disappointed, but at least I'm still using the starter cartridges. "Me too!" Reluctantly, I have to agree with everyone. HP has turned their back on us.
I have been a loyal customer since buying a thermal Inkjet in the mid '80's. I have been a loyal HP customer since.
I still have my original LaserJet4 in perfect working order and maintain it myself.
But this V40 has made HP lose a big customer. I talked to management and told them my story as a private consumer. Just got lip service. I forgot to tell them I am a very large corporate customer as well. They will find out soon.
I took names. They will be hearing back from me.
*Customer support stinks
*Forget the online help, it stinks
*I tried the online email service and got "HP E-mail Support - Page Not Found" 3 times.
*I stayed on hold for too long when I called. Manager said it must be an old number (what does that have to do with it?)
OH YES!!!
If you complain hard enough an Executive Customer Support specialist calls you and asks you to call back at 800-756-0608, option 7.
Be careful! there is a hijack company which redirects you to dial 10-10-275-00. That is an international dial up and you will incur a $3 charge.
I told the manager and he discounted it as a wrong number. They think I am an idiot
They are half right, I WAS stupid to believe I was anything but a nickel to them. I will never make the same mistake again.
They lost my business forever!

"Carriage Jam @ 18 months" I've had this machine just over a year and have just gotten the "Carriage Jam" message and the loud noises that everyone else is complaining about. It is obvious that there is nothing jammed in there. This is a machine error not a person error.
They should realize by now that there is a definite issue with these. From Jennifer Rossi, February 02, 2005
"Garbage" The original ink cartridge are still good. However, there is a carriage jam -cartridges are all the way to the right. I followed the trouble-shooting guide to no avail. Now I'm stuck with extra set of color & b/W ink.
Printer was lightly used. I drape a sheet over it to avoid dust.
Did HP program this to break on cue?
Do not buy. From Jay Z, January 26, 2005
