"Works Fine" I have had no problems with this product on Winblows. I came across this forum searching for a linux driver for the product. Ideally, hardcode the G setting on router and on host device. Set it up in promiscuous mode to begin with, once conncected, set up your WEP. You can vary the channel to avoid radio conflict (beware of other linksys routers in your immediate area). If you keep the default settings, you WILL have problems, especially unwanted users of your bandwidth. for newbies, always RTFM. From Dean, January 27, 2005
"Linksys Products" I have seen many networking products installed as I am a computer tech for a company that provides onsite service,we have tried all the products as well. The one product that I have seen no problems which is (Linksys) very stable, you can always rely on they're products. I do not work for linksys, I am just a technician that was sick and tired of wasting time troubleshooting network problems due to poor hardware.Anyone that wants a Router or Wireless adapter to work properly then you should purchase Linksys. The reason some people are having problems with Linksys is because the first time nobody likes to read the directions and updates drivers and firmware to the router, and they think the product has failed, so it stands to reason the second purchase we tend to read the instructions very close and everything works well, Now everybody sends a bad review of the first Linksys product purchased, when in fact there was probably no problem with the first one at all. "odd" Well im reading alot about people plugging the product in before they install the drivers.
The instructions do say to install the software BEFORE plugging in the device.
i did this and it worked fine.
However, i made the mistake of plugging it in before installing on another computer, and i have been having problems since....
My problem is connecting in the first place.
Once im connected its fine, but if i need to reboot for some reason, or i unplug the device, i have a major problem reconnecting to my network.
Both machines were Win2k, one working, one slightly not working.
So i can say it works, and at the same time it doesnt work.
But i gave it a thumb up because the device worked for me when i followed the instructions "to the letter". From Matt, January 15, 2005
"Junk" If you want your computer to freeze/crash constantly buy this junk. I reinstalled the software 2x's and it still didnt work right, bought a D-Link ZERO problems.
I felt like stomping on the linksys before I broght it back to get my money but figured it wouldn't make a diffference, junk is junk. From BJ, January 01, 2005
"Linksys WUSG54G works if you don't use passphrase" I have 2 of the Linksys WUSG54G and neither would hold a WEP or connection until the Tech Support went through setup with me and had me NOT use the PassPhrase window to get the HEX that I needed. I suggest you Google for "ASCII to HEX" and use the HEX window on these adapters, or just PassPhrase it and copy the HEX window to NotePad and clear the PassPhrase window and just add the HEX back in. No problems since I do setups this way. From Ron Bolander, November 18, 2004
"What a piece" This thing worked perfectly for about 2 days. And by perfectly I mean the only thing that would go wrong is that XP would freeze up now and then and a cold boot was needed. After the first couple of days...all of hell broke loose. It says it has a strong connection and the second you try to do something on the internet to use that connection it completely drops out as if it never was connected. It loads like the first 1/8th of a website and then drops out as well. Totally not worth this hassle and frustration. I even bought the matching Wireless G Linksys Router. Total waste of money. Getting returned in the morning. From Anthony, October 02, 2004
"Buy this product it's very good" This product is excellent, I have it downstairs, and router (Corega all in one wireless - another excellent product) upstairs.
Gives me excellent connection strength through a wood floor and ceiling (writing this review through that connection).
It picks up other nearby networks easily, so if poss, try to run at G mode only to filter these out.
Also use 64bit encryption on XP, though 128 will work, it's trickier, because of length of key, see FAQs and forums(well documented0.
Make sure that 1st key generated is input into fields in XP connection.
That about wraps it up for fast and stable connections (my actual transfers never drop below 24.0MB's and connection shows as 54MB's). From Greg, September 11, 2004
"Not garbage ... just tricky to set up" I concur with a lot of people in this forum that have had difficulties with this product. I was stuck with 1.0 Mbps connection speeds and was ready to return the product.
The trick I found was to uninstall the Linksys software - the driver and the monitoring software will then uninstall. Then re-install the driver only from the installation software directory. The speed problems disappear. As I've only just done it I can't comment on the frequent drop outs prople are reporting.
It appears there is a conflict between Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration and the Linksys monitoring software.

"boot problems galore" It appears to me (besides all of the goofy install instructions) is that the card has screwed up multiple hard drives in two diff PCs. I can't boot from either...one won't even boot in Safe Mode.
only good Linksys suggestion was to change the channel from auto to 7 or 11 or something.

"802.11G and XP (Dropping Connection Solved!)" Folks,
For those of you who have a problem with your linksys 802.11g USB card, running XP and dropping off a Network, I believe I may have found the fix. Go to http://linksys.custhelp.com and see answer id 696..."Losing a Wireless Connection...." Summary: Under the Wireless Network Connection Properties, go to the authentication tab and Remove the check that reads something like "Enable IEEE 802.1x authenticaiton for this network." I did this and have been stable for a whole 15 minutes :)
Hope it helps. From mjd902, July 31, 2004
"I second "Cisco is giving a bad image..."" I tried the tip posted "Cisco is giving a bad image..." review and yes it's working much better. I also agree that linksys support could acknowledge the issue, nor of course provide a solution. Thanks for the tip.
This note (remember that initially, you cannot stop the process from the task manager, because the process is showed in win2k as a system process. You will have to change that in order to be able to stop it), how do you change that?!

"Linksys Wireless G usb adapter is garbage" The device cannot maintain a connection for more than a couple of minutes.
There is no info on setting it up anywhere.
Removing and reinstalling drivers is of no use.
There is no help on solving the problem, from Cisco or my ISP.
Suggested corrections by ISP caused WinXP system failure.
ISP suggestd that if wireless machine and router are not side by side, and if there is a s little as one wall betwenn them, problems in connection would result.
So what good is that? With this adapter you cannot have a remotely functioning machine.
There is no response to emails to Cisco.
Total junk. No support. This sounds like a scam!
Wast of time and money. From M Stikeman, July 11, 2004
"Cisco is giving a bad image..." Most Linksys Wireless products are really bad. When first I was looking for some wireless devices, I read in the box "Linksys a company of Cisco System". I worked for Cysco for a few years, and I know that their products are excellent.
Linksys is exactly the opposite. I got the wireless G USB, and it worked just for one day. They are terrible. I spent many days working together with support, and nobody was able to give me a solution. I sent them 15 emails, and non of them were answered. I decided to study the problem by myself, and got a few tips of how to make it work much better. However, still sometimes the lancard will not connect after booting the computer.
In win2k the monitor will start eating the virtual memory. As I read before, the programming part was done in India (?).
A tip for win2k users. Once you connect to a network, the monitor is useless. Try stopping the monitor through process (not through the monitor), and your computer not only will still be connected, but will work much faster. (remember that initially, you cannot stop the process from the task manager, because the process is showed in win2k as a system process. You will have to change that in order to be able to stop it). "USB54G...Very disappointing product/support" I plugged this thing in. Loaded the software. It worked great (48 to 54 mbps) for about ten minutes. Then it (the drivers) totally disappeared from my system. I re-installed. Couldn't get above 1 mbps even with the hub and router 1 foot apart. I called for "tech support". They said they'd email a updated driver. It never arrived. Called tech support again, they said I'd been mis-informed by previous "helper", there was no updated driver. After hours of being told that this was a problem with my machine, interference, etc., I have given up. You'd think a Cisco product/support would perfom better. Worst "tech support" I've ever encountered. From Andy Anderson, June 29, 2004
