What is this?
Dual-format DVD writer brings DVD+R recording to 8x and slightly ups CD-R/W burn speeds.
DRX-530UL Dual RW DVD+CD External Drive First Take A pioneer in dual-format DVD drives, Sony has announced its fourth generation burner, DRX-530UL DVD/CD Rewritable Drive. It claims to record a 8X DVD+R 4.7GB disc in about ten minutes, or twice the speed of the previous DRX-510UL model. This external drive includes both an i.LINK and a Hi-Speed USB interface for simple set-up and maximum flexibility, and comes along with a one-year limited warranty. Software bundle includes DVD video authoring software, DVD/CD burning software and packet-writing software for users to easily record files and folders. Beside the increased DVD+R writing speed, this Windows 2000/XP-only compatible drive stays at the same speed in burning DVD+RW, DVD-R & DVD-RW in comparison with DRX-510UL. CD-R & DVD-RW recording tops at 40x and 24x respectively.

"Fast, good build quality" I bought this drive (my first DVD burner) mainly to be used with the Adaptec VideOh! capture device in order to convert several old VHS tapes to DVD. I promtly burned two coasters. I found out from digging through Adaptec's knowledge bas that Sony's DVD drives need a firmware update to work properly with the VideOh! unit. Once I flashed Sony's new firmware (a simple process) all is well. It also upgraded the drive to burn DVD-R's at 8x just like the +R's.
I also gave the drive a real workout by backing up my ENTIRE hard drive (nearly 26 GB of data, jpg's, etc.) across 6 Memorex DVD+R disks using Nero 6.0 BackItUp in about 2 hours.
