Hitachi Externalizes Every Hard Drive They Got to USB

  June 5th, 2007

DON'T MISS

Tapping into the huge market of direct attached storage (DAS), Hitachi follows right after Toshiba to announce their external USB hard drive line-up. Their desktop drive starts at 500GB and goes up to 1TB. The case seems to be made out of matte plastic. The LED ring in front reminds us of that of the Western Digital external drive, but the latter serves as a capacity meter whereas the Hitachi is simply a button for one-touch backup. The PR didn't mention anything about the software capability, but we will soon find out from our review. The 2.5" portable drive offers up to 250GB at $249.99 and 200GB for $219.99. If you are looking for a 200GB or larger USB bus-powered drive, your options are to get the Hitachi, to build one yourself from generic USB enclosure, or to go for Toshiba 4200-rpm 200GB USB drive.
