Is the laptop's internal burner kicking the dust, eating the dust, or about to be put on eBay as the amazing coaster maker? Fret not, HP is bringing an extremely capable external DVD burner from Lite-On to the market - hooked up with our favorite USB 2.0 interface, no less. Known to us frantic holiday shoppers as the dvd840e, this burner looks twice as capable as the top of the line burners from last year... probably because it is.
While the CD burn speeds are nothing to make a fuss over with only a 40x R 32x RW rating, the dvd840e's strength comes from it's DVD format support and speeds, boasting 16x DVD write speeds for both + and - R, 8x speeds for RW, and a whopping 8x for dual layer DVDs. What's more, there's support for the DVD-RAM format popularized by JVC camcorders and various backup solutions, rated at 5x.
Finally, you'll never have to look for a sharpie again, as this drive supports HP's licensed LightScribe technology for laser-etching your own custom grayscale photo labels directly onto the disc just by flipping it. The same technology is already supported by other vendors like Nero, Verbatim and LaCie, with LightScribe CDs and DVDs already in retail stores.Filed under DVD & CD Writers
