I-O Data has updated their PC-less DVD burner, the UW8D2 by bumping CD and DVD write speeds across the board. The sole purpose of this burner is to dub non-commercial DVDs and CDs without needing a PC. The price is set at $430, which seems pretty expensive to me considering it’s a single purpose machine. That said, business that put press kits or educational videos out on CD or DVD would likely find that the DVR-UW8D2 is easier to make multiple copies than using the PC. DVD+/- R write speed is 8x with DVD-RW at 6x, DVD DL +/-R at 4x. I have to wonder if the device could be used to dub copies of your own movies and games. I’m betting some it could while some titles with protection measures wouldn’t allow you to copy. You can also connect the drive to your PC via USB if you so desire.
