IO-DATA Blu-Ray USB Burner, Cool but Expensive

  April 24th, 2006

IO-DATA has announced their new internal and external Blu-Ray drives, which are re-branded Pioneer drives. Both Extremetech and Akihabara News have a bit of info on the drives. The first thing that jumps out is that the drives are seriously expensive.

How expensive? IO-DATA's Blu-Ray USB drive is just slightly under $1000 USD. That is a lot of coin for a drive, you could buy a complete system for that price. BD & BDE disks are written at 2x speed. The drives are also compatible with DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW and DVD-ROM, though at speeds slower than what you typically find on DVD drives. Unless you really like to have the newest gear, I suggest you wait for prices to come down and speeds to go up before you jump on the Blu-Ray wagon.
