ION iCUE Up Your Digital Sounds for Mixing

  December 2nd, 2007

DON'T MISS

For DJs, first there was vinyl, then there was CDs…and now there's MP3s. We're pretty sure we heard at one point that the true old skool DJ would touch nothing but the black plastic platters, but we're happy to have the march of technology prove us wrong, particularly when it comes in such convenient packages, like Ion Audio's iCUE. The iCUE is a USB 1.1 DJ mixer that uses audio files for club-style mixing, and comes complete with faders, pitch wheels, and EQ knobs – and a scratch button, which seems like a little bit of a cop-out over the skill needed for authentic vinyl scratching – for the complete DJ experience. There's also a built-in sampler for building loops, and Windows-based software to beat match sound files so you don't mess up a groove.

After our experience with Ion's TTUSB10 turntable, we have to admit that we're intrigued by how easy the iCUE looks to use. Physical interfaces of any sort have been the ultimate luxury in the home digital audio world, because while they're really, really useful, they aren't vitally necessary to getting the job done. If the iCUE is as easy to use as it looks, it might very well be worth the cost.
