JVC Puts 2-megapixel on Everio HDD Camcorder

  October 5th, 2005

JVC has bumped their Everio G series of camcorders with the GZ-MG70, the latest foray into high-capacity digital camcorders. Using a 30GB hard disk drive as the storage medium, the GZ-MG70 can hold up to 7 hours of DVD-quality MPEG-2 video (9Mbps), or 37 hours of internet-quality video (1.7Mbps). JVC also upgraded the CCD image sensor to 2.12 megapixels for 1600x1200 still shots, scaling back to 1.2 megapixels for image-stabilized video.

The GZ-MG70's hard disk employs some of the same technologies present in IBM laptops, including polymer shock absorbers and a sudden-acceleration sensor that will lock the head of the hard drive in free fall, preventing a hard drive crash. And like your computer, using a hard drive means that users can randomly access different parts of video or just start recording without worrying about queuing up a tape.

JVC will be bundling the new camcorder with software for both major platforms, relying on iPhoto and Pixela Capty MPEG Edit EX for Mac enthusiasts. Windows users will get a free copy of CyberLink's DVD suite, including PowerProducer for burning DVDs, PowerDirector for editing video, and PowerDVD for watching the finished product. The Everio GZ-MG70 will begin shipping next month with a MSRP of $1,100.
