LaCie Float, a USB 3.0 SSD Weirdly Doubles as Multi-touch Trackpad
LaCie is certainly no stranger to thinking outside the box and coming up with some pretty nifty inventions. This is why we were not all that surprised when they did it again by combing two product niches that honestly we never thought would be mentioned in the same sentence. The all new LaCie Float, combines the portability of an external storage solution with that of a touchpad. Basically, it is an over-sized hard drive enclosure made from carbon fiber with a glass top. The glass top is touch sensitive (with multi-finger touch abilities) and when you plug in the hard drive (to access the files) it also is recognized as an input device. Even better is this bad boy is USB 3.0 equipped.

This certainly sounds not only odd, but also a tad bit dangerous. Oh we are sure it's perfectly safe for you to use and perfectly safe for your computer, but we really cant say the same about the hard drive you stick inside it. Hard drives are very fragile devices and bumps, bangs and all the things you associated with a trackpad are down right BAD for a hard drive's health. By the same token, LaCie does make this in a solid state drive version which is immune to this issue; and thus makes a heck of a lot more sense. If you are an IT professional who wants not only a conversation piece but a hybrid device that looks down right cool, the LaCie Float maybe right up your alley. For everyone else, if fear of killing your hard drive and/or the fear of the cost of SSD storage costs doesn't scare you, then this may just be the perfect gift to give to yourself.
