For many people, optical storage is a big part of their backup plan and as blank Blu-Ray disks get cheaper and cheaper a compatible reader and burner are becoming a crucial feature of many a road warrior’s arsenal.
Thumb drives are all well and fine but when you compare the cost of a large flash drive with that of Blu-Ray burner (and how cheap blank disks have gotten) which can also double as a movie playing device the choice is obvious for many: Blu-Ray wins.
Sadly, many modern laptops either lack a built-in Blu-Ray reader (let alone burner) or lack the room for
any optical device. That always has been the down side to the ultra portable laptops as "crucial" features get left out so the need for external drives has seen a resurgence of late. While LaCie is not the first to venture into the world of
external Blu-ray burners, it is nice to see more competition. Their latest aptly named
Slim Blu-ray not only can burn Blu-Ray disks at 6x but can also burn DVDs at 8x. It is too bad that this is a USB 2.0 device, but considering the reasonable price tag of $249.99 and the fact that it ships with CyberLink software its not all that bad. Even better is the small "slim" nature of the device so it wont take up all that much room in your laptop bag.
