LaCie USB HDD Goes Biometric & Mac Friendly

LaCie sent us details of their new mobile USB hard drive with biometric security. The SAFE Mobile Hard Drive can be locked or unlocked by swiping a finger over an embedded sensor in the recessed area of the hard drive.

According to the manual, LaCie is going to ship the SAFE Mobile Hard Drive with dual-platform software for both Windows XP and Jaguar/Panther/Tiger. This probably marks the first biometric device that didn't leave out Mac user group.

The bundled security utility locating in a 100MB virtual partition can store up to 10 fingerprints, shared by 4 regular users and an administrator. The internal hard drive spins at 5,400 rpm and has 8MB cache. Its top transfer rate with the USB interface is between 25 and 27MB/s.

The FA Porsche-designed USB hard drive starts at $149.99 for 40GB, and $199.99 for 80GB. It weighs at 7.05 oz. and measures at 5.43" x 3.15" x 0.98". Due in July, it will come with a PS/2 power sharing cable, and one-year warranty.
