USB-IF's New USB FlashCard Format

  May 16th, 2005

Measuring just 12mm wide, 4.5m high and 31.75mm long, Lexar's proposed USB FlashCard format is accepted by the Official USB Promoter Group and is now being put together into a guideline called Series "A" Plug Form Factor 1.0. Lexar believes the standard will accelerate the adoption of the new format in the next wave of flash memory-based electronics.

Comparatively, the USB FlashCard has the advantage of removing the cost of additional memory card controller slot, IPs and USB cables while providing universally compatibility. The standard is expecting competitions from dual-interface USB/SD card and new memory cards that boast native USB 2.0 compatibility. Moreover, flash memory usage in general is lowered as micro hard drives begin to take hold on electronics.

The guideline, however, does not define device electronics so companies can supposedly squeeze as many functions as possible into the USB card.
