Most of us are aware that HD DVD was handed a beat down by Blu-ray making the latter the standard for Hi-def video. Despite the win, the adoption of Blu-ray is still slow - mostly because of the high price. We are beginning to see some PCs and notebooks come with Blu-ray drives and LG is now offering an external solution for users looking to upgrade current systems with Blu-ray capability. Those early adopters that lost out betting on HD DVD with obsolete format movies around will like the LG drive as well. The LG BEO6 External Blu-ray Disc Rewriter and HD DVD Rom drive has a price tag of $899, which will relegate it to a niche status. The drive connects to any PC via a USB 2.0 cable, though software for viewing Blu-ray movies and authoring Blu-ray discs is provided for Windows only. The drive can write to most any DVD format and can burn Blu-ray discs at 6x speed and can only play HD DVD movies. That’s considerable faster than the Lite-on USB Blu-ray drive with a max speed of 4x on Blu-ray media. The Buffalo combo USB drive burns at the same speed, but lacks the good looks of the LG drive. Then again the Buffalo drive is significantly cheaper at $568. About Everything USB
