LG BE08 Dual-interfaced Blu-ray Writer Hits 8x

8x Blu-ray media is still hard if not impossible to come by, yet LG has made sure you will enjoy the fastest burning speed with the brand new BE08 BE-R/E writer. Succeeding the BE06 (Blu-ray / HD DVD combo), the external burner naturally supports just Blu-ray for hi-def media, and comes ready to connect via USB 2.0 and eSATA.

eSATA is here for practical reasons as 8x speed actually demands 288Mb/s (or 36MB/s), at such speed writing a 25GB single layer BD-R can be completed in 13 minutes. Though, some USB 2.0 hosts may have problems keeping up. You probably won't have to worry about this just yet until 8x media ships in volume. LG also brags about the BE08 capable of upscaling the DVD to 'near-HD' level quality, but CyberLink PowerDVD should be given the credit for it. The BE08 will likely in the $400 range when it hits retail sometime in Q1 2009.
