Memorex Labels TravelDrive IDs with LCD

  October 13th, 2005

Remember that pitiful medium called the floppy disk? Well, they always had one up on the USB flash drive, and it wasn't until Memorex pointed this out that I realized it. There are no sticker labels included with flash drives to say whatever's on it. For owners of multiple flash drives, the only way to tell them apart besides masking tape is to buy different brands and colors, until now.

Memorex plans to fix this through the use of a 13-character Surface Stabilized Cholesteric (SSC) LCD in their TravelDrive ID, able to display the name of the drive, a date, or the contents of the drive including how much space is left. The best part? It doesn't have to be plugged into a computer to show these statistics either.

The TravelDrive ID is set to ship in capacities of 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB for $80, $120, and $200 respectively. By comparison, you can get a 512MB drive for just over $35 if you shop around. That's quite a premium for just an LCD.
