Microsoft Sues Belkin, but Doesn't Want $$!

  August 2nd, 2006

Microsoft suing or being sued isn't an uncommon event these days. Oddly this time the suit isn't for antitrust wrongs, nor is it even about software at all. And get this, Microsoft doesn't even want money! Sure sign of the end times this is.

Microsoft has filed suit against hardware maker Belkin for allegedly infringing on their utility patents covering technology called U2. No, not the band nor the U3 flash drive tech. Rather U2 is a utility that allows things like keyboards and mice to determine whether they need USB or PS/2 connections. Microsoft marketed the tech to Belkin in March as well as to a number of other big name players in the hardware and peripherals industry.

Belkin was the sole hold out and as it turns out apparently chose to use the tech anyway without the need for that pesky license thingy. In truly un-Microsoft fashion, the suite doesn't seek monetary damages. Rather Microsoft seeks to keep the U2 equipped mice and keyboards out of the US marketplace.
