Microsoft Zune Zoom In

  September 15th, 2006

Microsoft has lifted the curtain on its much hyped Zune portable media player. Thanks to Engadget, there isn't a whole lot we don't know about the Redmond's secret weapon to dethrone the iPod, which just got a modest upgrade earlier this week. The most notable feature found on the 30GB MP3 player is the ad-hoc Wi-Fi for local communications. Songs can be wirelessly shared among Zune owners, who can play them for 3 times over 3 days. If you want to own then, simply flag the songs so that Zune Marketplace can download right into your player during next sync. Interestingly, Zune isn't friendly with any PlayForSure stores, but it's almost certain that some arrangements will be made for you to 'redeem' the purchased media from the Microsoft-managed download/subscription stores.

As for the Zune, you won't find more than 3 buttons and a 5-way pad. The minimalist design is accompanied by 3 color choices (black, white and brown), a 3" QVGA screen, a FM tuner with RDS support, and a video decoder that can handle up from WMV to H.264. Fun doesn't end just yet, Microsoft has lined up over a dozen of accessory manufacturers that plan to ship a bewildering array of Zune-certified after-market add-ons. Unfortunately, there's no specs on dimensions nor weight. Nothing yet is mentioned on the pricing as well.
