Ever Vigilant USB Sentinel Protects Data on Flash Drives for the Lazy

  August 15th, 2008

WE RECOMMEND

Many things that we do when using a PC are not good for their data. For instance, we plug in a USB drive and then simply jerk the drive out of the USB port when they're done. If you're using a flash drive that is running software, removing the drive early can cause corruption of the software and lead to data loss. A company called MokaFive, the same gang who brought you the MokaFive LivePC platform, has announced a preview of new software it calls USB Sentinel.

USB Sentinel aims to fix several issues that are common to USB drives. The software promises to allow users to remove the USB drive at any time, without data corruption. It promises to improve the performance of USB drives, especially with write operations using small files, by collating and batching operations. The software also promises to extend the life of your flash drive by combining multiple write/rewrite operations into a single write. MokaFive repeats that the software is a technology preview and currently only works with Windows XP SP2 and doesn't work with all drives. We guess you just have to download the software and try it to see if it works for your setup and flash drive.
