Unlike serial and parallel interface, Universal Serial Bus has an advantage of providing power to devices, such as webcams and scanners, on a USB cable through which the power and data are distributed. However, the current specification limits the amount of current supplied to peripherals. Now, a group, called PoweredUSB, has drafted a new specification that allows peripherals to derive additional power from a USB port.
Appended to the current USB 1.1/2.0, the new PlusPower specification 0.8 calls for a new connector which provides two additional wire pairs for extra power.
"PoweredUSB is a natural fit for the retail point-of-sale peripheral market but we also believe that other industries could benefit from this connectivity technology. For example, there are many industrial control systems that are currently using USB as the interface method. These industrial controllers almost always have a separate power supply. They could easily benefit from PoweredUSB connectivity and eliminate their separate power supply and associated wiring."
At press date, PoweredUSB technology has not been approved by the official USB Promoter Group. The PoweredUSB said gaining acceptance is a difficult process.Filed under
