Due in August, Sony’s $400 credit card-sized NW-HD1 Network Walkman is really the company’s first attempt to take on Apple iPod. Before, Sony had no hard drive music player, and the only thing that came close was Hi-MD which max out at 1GB.
The core of the player is a 1.8-inch 20GB hard drive with G-sensor shock protection to safeguard against data loss due to impacts. Sony also boasts NW-HD1’s 30-hour playback on a single charge, which outpaces even the Creative Zen Touch on specs.
The overall design is reminiscent to iPod, especially the wheel navigation on the right hand side of the backlit display. The jog-dial won’t be touch-sensitive, unlike Apple’s.
The NW-HD1 comes bundled with SonicStage 2.1, which you must use to convert your WMA/MP3 library into ATARC before transferring the songs through Hi-Speed USB.
No words have been given yet on WMA DRM compatibility though.Filed under MP3 Players
