It looks VIA has changed their minds and decided to design a USB 2.0 host controller, and in basic terms, support USB 2.0. The VIA's first USB 2.0 solution - VT6202 PCI USB host controller - can power up to 4 USB 2.0 ports, which deliver speed of up to 480Mb/s. Complying to the USB 2.0 specification, the VT6202 is available in two formats: a 4-port PCI USB 2.0 add-in card or a USB2.0 host controller installed on the motherboard. In addition, rather than incorporating OHCI USB 1.1 controllers, the VT6202 utilize VIA's UHCI USB 1.1 cores to offer backward compatibility for legacy USB devices. Supporting USB 2.0 is contrary to what Wenchi Chen, CEO of VIA, wants. At the Computex tradeshow in Taiwan, Chen openly stated that USB 2.0 should 'disappear.' Quoted from Chen: "Our message to partners is if together we can make this [USB 2.0] disappear, the better it will be for us." USB 2.0 has full support from Intel, and has announced that they will be including ports on their chipset-driven motherboards. VIA surely saw supporting USB 2.0 as the best solution to competing with Intel-based chipsets for the PIV. No word on when we'll begin seeing USB 2.0 included on motherboards, but estimate early 2002. See Also: USB 2.0 FAQMore
