WD's New USB Drives Can Take Abuse

  November 11th, 2004

When you drop a cell phone, you expect it to work after you pick it up. With a hard drive, it’s a different story... or is it?

Western Digital has taken their durable Scorpio 2.5” HDD and placed it into a tough steel enclosure built to last. Dubbed the Passport, the new external drive comes in 40GB and 80GB capacities that spin at 5400 rpm, while drawing so little power that they actually are powered by the USB bus. Should your laptop limit the available bus power, an optional AC adaptor is available for purchase from WD’s website.

Current pricing for the 40GB model is $199, while the larger 80GB model will run you about $249.
