Jumping out of the Delorean, Nikon drops a futuristic bomb on us. The new Nikon COOLPIX S1000pj digital camera incorporates an LED projector that can throw a big screen image out of a pocket sized camera. Space-alien technology aside the S1000pj looks like a run of the mill pocket camera. 12 Megapixel image capturing and 3 forms of blur reduction make this a standout amongst Earth-camera's already. Lens shift image stabilization is a nice inclusion in such a small camera which is accompanied by the oft maligned iso-bumping function. The third system is off the beaten path a bit which snaps a succession of consecutive pictures and intelligently selects the sharpest image. While this technology has actually been boiling for some months now we're somewhat surprised to see it in a digital camera. Smart money would have bet on it arriving in the wild and crazy world of cell phones. Not just a gimmick, Nikon has surrounded the projector with really appropriate accessory functions for use with a camera-slash-projector. A tiny remote control is included that on top of controlling the slide show or home movies ALSO can remote control the camera functions. This has tons of applications for trying to coordinate self-inclusive group portraits. No more running to outrun the timer or passing around a laptop or worse the paleolithic 3x5 print.
