Ofcom Changes UK Regulations to Allow for Wireless USB

  August 14th, 2007

WE RECOMMEND

Ofcom has changed it's regulations to allow for short-range wireless technology like ultra-wideband (UWB) that will usher in wireless USB so we can all cut those cables that get in our way. UWB will allow for data transmission of up to 3 Gbps over 30m of distance.

Ofcom is set to introduce its Wireless Telegraphy (Ultra-Wideband Equipment) exemption Regulations 2007 on August 13. Ofcom also goes on to say that research has show UWB to require less power than WiFi, which leads to longer battery life on notebook computers using UWB tech. This new exemption will allow peripheral makers to start selling Certified Wireless USB devices like the Belkin 4-port WUSB hub in the UK, and will allow UWB devices in the UK to be used legally without a license just as the same types of devices are allowed to here in the U.S. and in Japan.
