Philips Prepares Rugged 10GB 1" Hitachi Drive

  September 13th, 2005

Philips is expanding their storage department to include portable hard disks, and what better way to start off than shock proof the iPod mini's hard drive and load it with software. The little brother of the soon-to-be-released hard drive triplets, the SPD5400CC uses a USB 2.0 bus-powered connection to drive a 6GB or 10GB 1" Hitachi hard drive, spinning at 3600 rpm to deliver 10MBps.

The drive is quite well protected, with integrated drive suspension, rubber corners to absorb impact shocks, and what we can only assume is a titanium enclosure. Whatever its made out of, Philips claims the tiny hard disk can withstand a 1.8-meter drop onto a hard surface.

Software-wise, the SPD5400CC is loaded with Nero BackItUp and Nero EasySync to back up important documents automatically and then encrypt them. Copernic Desktop Search is also loaded to quickly find emails, PDFs, pictures, and anything else lost in the midst of your folder hierarchy. The software is only compatible with Windows PCs, although Mac users can still use the hard drive itself.

If you're looking to get a new 10GB mini hard drive now, keep looking. The 10GB won't be out until the second half of 2006 while the 6GB will hit retail in October.
