Philips' MSN Messenger-Certified USB Handset

  January 5th, 2006

Philips' MSN Messenger-Certified USB HandsetIf you happen to be using MSN Messenger rather than Skype to make calls to distant relatives, you may want to know Philips is showcasing a new VoIP USB phone with seamless support for Windows Messenger. So, we believe you can't just switch this phone to Skype nor to Mac.

Philips calls their new Internet telephony offering the VOIP433 Dual Phone. With it, you will have three calling choices: free PC-to-PC calling through Windows Live Messenger; supposedly low-cost PC-to-phone outbound calling via MCI Web Calling Service; and good old traditional landline calling.

The VOIP433 also uses some proprietary wireless USB technology to exchange contact info between Windows and the phone and to establish audio link between the charging station and the cordless handset.

Both MS and Philips don't have much else to say except the VOIP433 will be available initially in Europe, Asia Pacific, and Latin America. Perhaps MS has ordered another hardware partner to offer something similar in America.
