New Powered USB Provides 5V, 12V & 24V

  June 2nd, 2006

New Powered USB Provides 5V, 12V & 24VA new standard for USB power is debuting soon. The power output is much higher than the normal USB power output and incorporates a different USB connector on the system end. If widely adopted this could perhaps lead to USB peripherals that consume more power and still don't require external power adapters to operate.

The new cable is a double decker design that looks similar to two stacked standard USB connectors crossed with a CAT 5 RJ45 connector. While the specification dictates that the power source terminal end is made that way, the other end is left open to what the manufacturer needs for their device. Standard USB power output is .5A, the new standard can provide a full 6A or around 12 times more power. You can read more over at Akiba.
