Sony 2009 S-series Walkman Adds Speakers, Flip-out Stand

Just as there are signs traditional tactile control DAPs are showing its age, Sony's latest incarnation of the long-lasting S-series Walkman makes an appearance that suggests why touch-screen is the future. The 2009 S-series Walkman is largely the same as the current version, especially in the software interface department (yawn).

In terms of differences with the 2008 model, the three-circle control layout has been tweaked to allow for shorter travel between the buttons. Top and bottom of the DAP show what appears to be stereo speakers which make sense if you make use of the integrated flip-out stand. The 2.4" LCD is small, but it's better for watching video than pitifully tiny 2" screen of the current S-series. Also included is microphone for voice recording. There's no mention of the universally praised noise canceling system and bundle of EX headphones. However, they could just be reserved for the higher end models. Look for the S-series Walkman to sidetrack attention during Apple's annual iPod roll-out festival in September.
