Sony really has it going for them with their Walkman trademark; practically spearheading the portable music industry, it's time to pull out the loveable brand name again to deliver tunes the way Sony sees fit.
Simply called the WALKMAN, Sony's new jukebox plays both ATRAC3plus and MP3 formats in 6GB and 20GB servings. The special ingredient? A souped up mobile phone-esque interface designed to find tracks quickly by the usual ID3 denoted genre, artist, rating, etc. Or perhaps it's the intelligent shuffling that can select from your 100 most listened to tracks or play all the loaded tracks from a random year. Or even the artist and genre linking that searches for tracks that match what you're currently listening to.
The rebirth of the Walkman has its share of fashion statements as well. The 20GB player comes in violet and silver shades while the 6GB also comes in blue and pink, all of which have matching headphones and a trendy battery-saving OLED display. And lets not forget the accessories, including a remote control, carrying cases, docking station, and docking speaker system.
As far as music downloading goes, Sony is opting to follow Apple's approach in using closed DRM standards to force all purchases to be made through Sony's CONNECT service for downloading ATRAC-encoded songs. Let's hope the one million tracks they have for sale are actually good ones.Filed under MP3 Players
