Sony Adds MP3 over USB To 1GB Car Head Units

  November 30th, 2005

Tape adapters, FM transmitters, flash cards - they're all pish posh in the eyes of Sony. Most car stereo head units are detachable these days, so why not add a USB port and sync it with the computer? Sony did just that with the Xplod MEX-1GP Giga Panel, which as far as we know is also the first Sony MP3 player that's drag-n-drop (mass storage device) capable.

The $350 Giga Panel holds up to a gigabyte of music encoded in MP3 or WMA format, every song displaying its artist, title, and album information stored in ID3 tags on the 13-segment LCD display. To satisfy users of the Sony CONNECT online music store, ATRAC songs are supported, but only when burned onto a CD. Tracks can be shuffled or repeated through by album or playlist, and can be advanced safely while driving via remote control.
