Tritton Brings Inexpensive 5.1 Headset to Gamers

  January 12th, 2007

With Tritton's official launch of the Audio Xtreme PC USB 5.1 surround sound headphones, spoiled net gamers cooped up in their rooms can no longer use the "stereo only" excuse for not attending LAN parties. Utilizing 4 channels per ear (Front, Rear, Center, Subwoofer), the AXPC is able to deliver true 6-channel audio straight to your eardrums, without any expensive or external sound cards to buy. While this in itself is nothing ground breaking, it should be noted that the lightweight earphones are circumaural, going outside the ear instead of on top of it allowing for a more comfortable fit during extensive gameplay sessions. The microphone is detachable, and the mini-subs also provide somewhat of a rumble effect. While I couldn't adequately judge sound quality due to the ambient CES volume, the sound separation did seem rather impressive watching Die Another Day, and according to one of Tritton's PR heads, the better-known 5.1 headset on the market from LTB is "crap" in comparison. We'll wait to do a 5.1 shootout review before we make any quality judgments of our own. With configurable sound levels and a detachable microphone, the $70 MSRP is already a bargain. Look for the AXPC to begin shipping in 35 days or so.
