MBridge: WiFi Multimedia Viewer with Hi-Speed USB OTG

  January 30th, 2006

MBridge: WiFi Multimedia Viewer with Hi-Speed USB OTGThe San Jose-based Unicon just comes up with something that never tried before. Their new Linux-powered tablet with a 3.5" touch-screen may resemble a PDA, but it is much more multimedia-focused and is accompanied by a host of USB features. In a nutshell, the MBridge has a built-in WiFi, browser, email program, MP3, IM clients, photo editing tools as well as utilities to exchange files between a variety of USB devices.

The MBridge primary goal is to free consumers from PC. For starter, you can locate any nearby WiFi access point, log on and then surf the web navigating with a stylus. On the browser, you can log in any online music stores of your choice, whether it be Allofmp3, Yahoo! Music or Napster. (How it pass the compatibility test is beyond us since some requires WMP10.) Purchased tracks can be played back locally or downloaded to a USB MP3 player. MBridge mentions USB CD/DVD burner, but technically, you should be able to burn songs on audio CDs.

The MBridge is also for the shutter-bugs; it allows you to upload photos from a USB camera directly to MSN Photos, Wal-Mart Photo Center, Yahoo Photos and etc. The peer-to-peer transfer between a DSC and the MBridge is Hi-Speed USB OTG - a first seen on a portable device. Other USB bridges only manage to crawl at original USB speed or 12Mbps. Via the photo tools, you can crop, resize, adjust saturation, sign, and apply multiple filters to the pics. Unicon didn't say anything about the MBridge video capability. We assume it's going to be limited as the gadget lacks a HDD. Its storage relies solely on SD. It would be cool if there's a 60GB 1.8" HDD to store the MPEG-2 video from a USB HDD camcorder.

You'll also find an instant messaging client that works with MSN, AIM and ICQ. The input method is limited to stylus. Unicorn will retail the MBridge for $159.99 in October 2006. The company is working on "chip on firm" to make the gadget even slimmer. So, it could be that the final specs has not been confirmed yet.
